BRITBANGLA: Setting New Boundaries
BRITBANGLA is launching its new group created by a team of dynamic
young Bengalis to bring together people with vision, energy and
drive to celebrate all that is good about being British and a Bengali.
“It is about recognising the success stories, achievements and the
good work done by many of the people in our community that goes
unrecognised,” explains co-founder, Taryn Khanam.
We want to raise the profile of British Bengalis and highlight their
contribution to British society, says Shirin Hussain, another co-founder.
In July 2002, Shirin and Taryn came together with their friends,
journalist, Rumiya Nasrin and accountant, Syed Hussain to create,
BRITBANGLA, a networking organisation where they could meet like-minded
people and make a difference to society.
“We have a unique identity as BritBengali, fusing together best
of both worlds. We want to celebrate Bengali successes and achievements,”
they say. “BRITBANGLA is for all Bengali speaking people be they
from Calcutta or Dhaka.”
They point out that for far too long the Bengali community has been
pigeonholed as restaurant owners or rag trade workers. However,
there are many young Bengalis working as professionals, artists
and entrepreneurs and this talent needs to be profiled in wider
British society.
BRITBANGLA is a platform that will enable that to happen as it reflects
the views and aspirations of second and third generation Bengalis
growing up within a dual culture.
BRITBANGLA aims to bring people together by organising social events,
undertaking fundraising activities for charities and assisting community
initiatives through mentoring and voluntary work.
BRITBANGLA is hosting its inaugural Launch Dinner and Dance Party
at Alexandra Palace on 12th April @ 7pm. The event will celebrate
the achievements of British Bengalis in all walks of life and highlight
up and coming talent from the community.
The evening will be a truly glamorous affair, consisting of a three-course
sit down dinner, a live variety dance, fashion show, music and comedy
performances. The party will continue into the night with dancing
and raffle prizes.
There will be an ‘exclusive fashion show ‘ by BritBengali designer,
Pasha Razzo, whose work has been selected for London Fashion week,
and special performances by Osmani Soundz. Live entertainment by
the award winning Intamixx Roadshow.
This celebration will fundraise to support the work of Plan UK
at grass roots level to set up long-term development in Bangladesh;
as well as raising money for medical students at the Osmani Medical
College, Sylhet.
BRIT BANGLA Launch Dinner and Dance Party is sponsored by HM Prison
Service, Prestige Auto Group and Army.
