DEVASTATION IN BURMA: CYCLONE NARGIS
Powerful winds and floods swept away homes as cyclone Nargis swept
eastwards across Myanmar from the Bay of Bengal. The
cyclone in Burma has killed tens of thousands of people and left
up to one million homeless. Aid agencies are appealing for help
and say the need is "immediate and vast". Survivors urgently
need temporary shelter, clean water and food but it may take days
to reach those areas. The death toll is reported to be 22,500 and
up to 41,000 are missing.
So how can you help?
One of the major channels of aid is the UK-based Disasters Emergency
Commitee - an umbrella organisation of 13 major aid agencies. It
was set up to streamline the donation process, and act as a co-ordinating
body for aid agencies when a humanitarian crisis occurs. The DEC
say the most useful thing people can do is give money - rather than
sending goods. This means agencies can source as many supplies as
they can locally. This cuts down transport costs and boosts the
local economy. If people donate goods, there are big obstacles around
transportation.

A BUFFET FOR BURMA with Ustadh Abu Muntasir (JIMAS)*
Date: Saturday 31st May 2008
Time: 6.30 pm - 9.00 pm
Venue: Toynbee Hall, 28 Commercial Street, Aldgate, London, E1 6LS
With up to 1000 years of Islamic heritage, the history, culture
and environment of Burma make it a very unique and rich country.
Unfortunately many of its people have been living in poverty and
the recent cyclone has brought further suffering to their lives.
Come and taste authentic Burmese cuisine with recipes from some
of the various Burmese Muslim communities, including Rohingyas,
Panthay, Pashus, Kamans and Myedu. And while you are stimulating
your taste buds, learn more about the beautiful story of Islam's
journey to the heart of Burma and how Burmese Muslims have been
particularly affected by the current regime. Ustadh Abu Muntasir,
who knows the country well, will remind us of the importance of
charity during times of disaster and relate some of his personal
experiences of the region.
All proceeds from the event will be donated to Burma Aid - a not
for profit company in the process of UK charity registration; registration
number - 06591979. All are welcome but please book your seat in
advance.
